Delta Phi Alpha

September 2005 Newsletter

Dear Faculty Advisor:

Welcome back! I hope you had a relaxing summer break, and I hope this year will be a good one for you, your chapter, and for students of German.

  1. The Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship Information Sheet and Application forms are now available on line at the Delta Phi Alpha website (www.longwood.edu/deltaphialpha/

You may download the application and information sheet and make copies for your students as needed. This office will, in winter or early spring, notify the faculty advisors who recommended candidates of the outcome of the competition. The award in the senior category is $2000; the award in the sophomore/junior category is $1000. Seniors applying for the Delta Phi Alpha award must also apply to the DAAD for an annual award. In order to allow applications for the DAAD award for the Senior category to reach the DAAD office in New York on time, the deadline for receipt of completed applications is October 25, 2005. Please advise students that letters of recommendation should be requested as soon as possible in order to have them in on time. Students should ask those recommending them to deliver the recommendations to them in a sealed envelope signed across the seal. The applicant can then be sure that all required documents are sent at the same time. A selection committee of three professors will determine the winners of the Delta Phi Alpha scholarships.

  1. The Annual Meeting of the National Council will be held during the ACTFL conference in Baltimore at the Convention Center on November 17-20. Notice of the time and exact location of the meeting will be sent to faculty advisors in October. All faculty advisors are invited to attend the meeting and those who cannot attend are encouraged to send in suggestions or recommendations to the office of the National Secretary-Treasurer (reynoldsjf@longwood.edu).

  1. The Chapter Report Form is also available on line at the Delta Phi Alpha website. We will be including information from the Chapter Report Form on the site.

  1. The next issue of Delta Phi Alpha Bulletin (2006-2007) will be printed this fall. Each member of the Society receives a copy of the Bulletin at the initiation ceremony. If your chapter needs additional copies of the Bulletin, please let me know. Any corrections or omissions should be brought to my attention.
  2. New Faculty Advisors should send their correct title and academic address, including e-mail address, to this office in order to insure prompt receipt of all communications.
  3. Certificates: A list of student names, spelled exactly as they are to appear on the membership certificates, should be sent to this office. Printing and mailing of certificates takes between 3-4 weeks after receipt of the $20/student initiation fee. Please note: It is important that only ONE check for the full membership fees, made out to Delta Phi Alpha, be sent to the National Secretary-Treasurer’s office. Checks from individual initiates will be returned.

  1. Honor Cords: Honor cords for graduating members of Delta Phi Alpha can be ordered from this office at the price of $10 each. Cords can also be ordered in lots of 12 or more directly from Schoen Trimming & Cord Co., Inc., 151 West 25th St., New York, NY 10001 (e-mail: Schoentrims@aol.com). 1. Many thanks go to Dr. Geoffrey Orth who took over the duties of National Secretary-Treasurer for me while I was in Austria last year. Thanks to Geoff’s efforts, the Delta Phi Alpha web site was up-dated and many new items, including the Scholarship Application Form and the Chapter Report Form were added to the site.
