The Gamma Alpha Chapter of Delta Phi Alpha at Colby College, Waterville, Maine received a chapter grant in support of its film and lecture series, Kicking It: Screening German Football, during the spring semester of 2014. In conjunction with public screenings and discussions of four films (Feb. 19: Die wilden Kerle; March 5: Die befreite Zone; April 7: Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen; April 29: Das Wunder von Bern), the chapter hosted a public lecture (co-sponsored with programs and departments in Cinema Studies, American Studies, German and Russian, and Athletics) by Prof. Elizabeth Dawson from Georgetown College, entitled “Golden Goal: Soccer as Cultural Space in German Film” on March 11, 2014. Leading up to the induction of Gamma Alpha’s newest members, the events drew on average 25 participants from the Waterville community. Most participants are convinced to this date that their semester-long celebration of the cultural significance of soccer played at least a little role in the success of the German national in Brazil 2014!
